2015 Straight Line Wine Zinfandel
A bright magenta hue with aromas of brambly red berries, dark cherry, plum, violet, rose, red currant and spice. In the mouth, bursting, lifted flavors of macerated red berries are complicated with spice notes and highlighted by brilliant acidity. This medium weight wine shows both the power and grace, a classic Zinfandel characteristic. In the long and concentrated finish, find notes of cassis liqueur, and red and purple fruits.
Kirschenmann Vineyard was planted in 1915 to head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel. Fine, ashen-colored sandstone soils gilt with flecks of silica as the Lodi sun ripens small, concentrated berries. The vineyard’s proximity to an oxbow in the Mokelumne River affords a more moderate, Mediterranean climate and relatively low temperatures. The combination of water deficiency, sandy soils, and moderated temperatures yield medium-bodied Zinfandel. The aromatics are high-toned and perfumed with a good amount of spice; the acidity is fresh, and harmonious with the tannin structure. Own-rooted and organically farmed, Kirschenmann is owned by vineyard specialist and Turley Wine Cellars winemaker, Tegan Passalacqua, and his wife, Olivia.
The fruit was hand-harvested and hand-sorted into half-ton picking bins and brought directly to the winery. A seven day cold soak with one punch-down per day assured proper tannin management and color extraction. The fruit was then removed from refrigeration to warm the juice and activate the native yeasts. One to two gentle punch downs per day provided just enough air for the yeast while promoting whole berry fermentation but minimizing extraction. The grapes were then pressed and the new wine fed via gravity-flow into four and a half French oak barrels, half of which were once used, and the remainder neutral. Aged in barrel for approximately one year, the wine received neither racking, nor fining, nor filtering.
