Pale golden color with scents of spring meadows, flowers, and lemony citrus fruits. Light to medium weight, lively acidity lifts flavors of passion fruit, cut grass, lime, ripe tangerine, and honey. Barrel fermentation and 7 months lees aging afford touches of delicate French oak and textural complexities. The finish is finessed and focused.
Located in the hills outside of Nicasio, a stone's throw from the Pacific Ocean and at an elevation of approximately 700ft., Devil's Gulch Ranch employs steep terraces comprised of decomposed sandstone soil and protected exposures. Planted in 1980, this vineyard clings to the hillside and is the extreme margin of the possibility of winegrowing. Wind, fog, and cold daytime temperatures slow the growth of the low producing Chardonnay vines and extend the growing season late into the season. The fruit is allowed to develop a complete flavor profile, and retain acidity while accumulating sugar in this cold, harsh environment. The result is perfect wine chemistry in conjunction with wholesome flavors and mountain-grown characteristics. Devil’s Gulch Ranch is owned and farmed by Mark Pasternak who also farms Chileno Valley Vineyard Pinot Noir for Couloir Wines.
The fruit was hand-harvested into half-ton picking bins and brought directly to the winery. Hand-sorted to ensure excellent quality for both flavor and textural development, 100% of the fruit was pressed whole cluster and settled overnight in a stainless steel tank. The next day, the juice was gravity-fed into neutral, 60 gallon French oak barrels. Gently stirred every other week, the juice went through spontaneous alcoholic fermentation; however, malolactic fermentation was arrested. Aged sur lie for 7 months, the wine was bottled in late April.
