2014 Couloir Monument Tree Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley 1.5L

2014 Couloir Monument Tree Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley 1.5L

Wine Enthusiast 94 Points, Editors' Choice: "Fabulous flavors and a racy, elegant texture lift this wine above the pack. It has an intricate perfume of baking spices, rhubarb and forest floor followed by vivid and slightly tangy fruit flavors all held together with ease by the lightly gripping mouth-feel."

PinotFile 94 Points: "...Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. This wine really impresses with aromas of muddled black cherry and raspberry, along with spice and wooded forest infusions. The aromas achieve more penetration with time in the glass. Mid weight plus flavors of black cherry, blackberry and spice satisfy with added accents of dark caramel and char from oak. Intriguing and beautifully balanced, with a seductive velvety texture that makes you want to pour this syrupy Pinot on your waffle. Score: 94"

Highlighting the fresh red berry flavors synonymous with Anderson Valley’s deep end, the 2014 Monument Tree Pinot Noir holds aromas of wild blackberries, dark cherries and spice. Perfumed notes of peppercorns, old growth conifer, and rose petals the delicate texture provides freshness on the palate and leaves you wanting for more. Red fruit, spice, and oak  translate into a lovely, lingering finish that is both complex and persistent.

Named for the landmark redwood tree that looms like a proud parent over the vineyard, Monument Tree was planted in 1999 to Dijon clones. The soils are comprised of gravelly clay/loam which lends a unique, site-specific black spice character with a brilliant spine of bright acidity. This low vigor site was originally planted by Napa Valley’s famed Duckhorn Vineyards and is now owned by Twomey Cellars. Situated in the Deep End of Anderson Valley, this is the definition of a true cool climate vineyard. The east and northeast-facing aspects of the vineyard allow the fruit to enjoy morning light, while avoiding the heat of the afternoon sun. This is a quintessential, premiere cru vineyard for Anderson Valley farmed by Ardzrooni Vineyard Management, who also cultivates Londer Vineyard and Roma's Vineyard for Couloir Wines.

Each of the three Pinot Noir clones (777, 667 & 115) was hand-harvested separately into half-ton picking bins and brought directly to the winery. We feathered dry ice into the bins to prevent spoilage and oxidation, and let the fruit rest in cold storage for a 24-hour period before hand-sorting and processing.  Half the fruit was fermented as whole clusters to add a layer of complexity and maintain the wine's bright flavor and taste profile. The grapes received a cold soak for seven days to extract maximum color from the Pinot Noir skins, while the chill prevented the start of fermentation. The fruit was then removed from refrigeration, warming and activating the native yeasts. One gentle punch down per day minimized tannin extraction from the skins, allowing the stem tannins to provide the wine’s structure. The grapes were then pressed and the wine was gravity-fed into eight French oak barrels, three of which were new. The barrels were initially stirred three times over a six-week period. The wine received neither racking, nor fining, nor filtering.
