A striking deep magenta hue leads to aromas of cassis, stewed red berries, graphite, licorice, and black cherry compote. Layered and intriguing, the dark fruit flavors shroud the palate while tannins provide structure and definition. Spice, plum skin, dark red fruits and herbs intermingle with a touch of oak.

This wine is comprised of fruit from three different California vineyards: Madder Lake Vineyard, Liberty Oaks Vineyard, and Terra Alta Vineyard. These three unique sites combine into a whole far greater than its individual parts.

Madder Lake is a rugged mountainside vineyard north of Napa Valley in Clear Lake. With altitudes reaching 2,200 feet and iron-rich volcanic soil with boulders the size of small cars, this low vigor vineyard produces intense wines with powerful blue and black fruit, spice, tar, and tannin.

The Liberty Oaks Vineyard, in the Jahant appellation of Lodi, is farmed by esteemed vineyard manager and vintner Markus Bokisch. The warm air and the volcanic clay loam soil forces the vines to reach deep into the earth for nutrients. The result is Tempranillo with plush, purple fruit flavors, spice, and dramatic richness on the palate.

The first two vineyards create the frame, but the final piece of the blend comes from the ancient and rare Spanish variety Graciano, grown in the Terra Alta Vineyard in Lockeford, CA. This unique varietal is the magical component that completes the blend by rounding out the mid-palate with a core of red fruit sweetness. The vineyard is CCOF.


The fruit was hand-harvested and hand-sorted into half-ton picking bins and brought directly to the winery.  A seven day cold soak with one punch-down per day assured proper tannin management and color extraction. The fruit was then removed from refrigeration to warm the juice and activate the native yeasts. Placed into open-top fermenters, one-third of the grapes from the Madder Lake Vineyard were fermented whole cluster, while the fruit from Liberty Oaks and Terra Alta were destemmed. The wine was aged in a 500L puncheon and French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, for about one year. Bottled without fining or filtration.
